6:4-10 – He explains where he has been
Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 6:4-10
verse 4
He shows up.
He starts with honest flattery, saying she is beautiful as Tirzah and as lovely as Jerusalem.
Just a note for those who want to date the book.
Solomon built up Tirzah and made it beautiful.
Tirzah became the main city of the northern kingdom within a very short time after Solomon died. The only time these two cities would have been mentioned together so positively, would have been during Solomon’s reign.
“Majestic as troops with banners”
A king likes to see his troops dressed up and marching or on display.
He is using what he is impressed with to compare to her.
verse 5
He talks about her eyes overwhelming him.
He is very positive as he describes her hair, her teeth, and her temples.
Then he throws in a surprise for us.
verse 8
This is either saying that there are many women available for a man after he has a fight with his wife. Or he is giving a running count of how many queens and concubines he has.
Concubines were like wives in the bedroom but didn’t have the social standing of the wives.
He then says that she is unique.
And says that the queens and concubines praised her.
Then he quotes what the queens and concubines said in praising her.
The next passage is Song of Solomon 6:11-12.
