8:1-2 – This Only works well if you plan to deliver
Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 8:1-2
At first this seemed strange to me. Why would she compare him to her brothers? Then I realized she is painting an image. They are on their way to the countryside. She is promising to do things with him sexually that they have done and he obviously enjoyed. And she is promising to do ‘new’ things. She has things in mind that they haven’t done that she is going to add. So he is exited and eager.
As they are going she is saying that if they were brother and sister they could be kissing now in public. If he was having any trouble following what she was saying, he would be sure to get it when she describes her brother as one who sucked on his mother’s breasts. She wants him thinking of this image – sucking on breasts. She is teasing him, but in a good way. She isn’t teasing about if they will have sexual relations. She is just keeping him focused as they go toward the countryside. If this was our society and they were at a restaurant and she was talking like this, he would be getting up and calling out “check please” and heading out the door with her.
The next passage is Song of Solomon 8:3-4.
