1.1-4 – The Song of Songs

Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 1:1-4

verse 1

The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s

verse 2

How I wish he would kiss me with the kisses of his mouth

because your lovemaking is better than wine

verse 3

For fragrance your perfumes are wonderful,

and perfume poured fragrantly is your name.

Therefore young maidens love you.

verse 4

Draw me after you! Let us run together!

How I wish the king would bring me to his chambers! GLK

The girl is with her friends and they see her special “guy” approaching.

They aren’t a couple yet, but they both are very interested in the other person.

The first line defines the book that we often call Song of Solomon

Solomon wrote 1005 songs.

This song, or group of songs made it into the Bible. So this is the best of what he wrote.

Watch how she changes from “I wish he would kiss me” to “your lovemaking”

In the first line she is talking out loud with her friends.

In the second line we are hearing her thoughts.

If this was a play or an opera, her character would step forward to the audience so that you would know she was telling you her thoughts and that the other characters on stage were not hearing this part.

Once you get use to the way it is written it makes more sense, and is easier to follow who is talking.

Other Bible translations or paraphrases very slightly in what words they use.

Remember this was written in Hebrew and our English Versions are translated from that or from a very early Greek translation.

We can look at multiple versions and it actually helps us understand the meaning.

Below are some selections from other versions

This is Solomon’s most beautiful song CEV

The Song of Songs, the most beautiful of them all,

which is Solomon’s  NLV

This is the greatest song Solomon ever wrote  NIRV

Kiss me — full on the mouth! MSG

Your love makes me happier than wine does.  NIRV

No wonder everyone loves to say your name MSG

the very mention of you name is like spreading perfume CEV

Take me with you  — let us hurry.  Oh, that the king would bring me to his chambers.  HCSB

Take me away with you! Let’s run off together!

An elopement with my King-Lover!

We’ll celebrate, we’ll sing

we’ll make great music  MSG

We will make mention of thy love more than of wine ASV

It all comes down to the same thing.

This girl really likes the guy.

She says out loud that she wants him to kiss her,

but in her thoughts she is thinking way past that.

She is turning her full attention on him.

Next time we will see what her friends do.

Maybe your friends are like this too.

Why I Am Doing This

I have information that is valuable for people who are making decisions about sex, love, romance, marriage and relationships. Admittedly, sharing on these topics is not something I have been eager to do. But it is the right thing to do, so here I go jumping in with both feet. More about us.
