They have made up.
She then presents this idea of going to the countryside – he has been willing to make up and spend time just with her (it seems like this is during the day, so instead of working he is willing to be with her), she says let’s go and check out the vineyards – yes his work is important, and she is not only saying that he can work, but that she will come along and be part of it – she also is saying that she wants to have sex with him out in the vineyard (note the vineyards often had a fence around them with a gate, so she is talking about sex outdoors but not out in public.
I though the guy was always supposed to make the first move. Is she really the one that is initiating it?
Oh yeah. She is definitely taking the lead. Here is what she says.
( Chapter 7, verse 11 to chapter 8 verse 3)
Come, my beloved. Let us go out into the countryside,
let us spend the night among the henna blossoms. Let us rise early to the vineyards.
Let us see if the vine has budded, its blossoms have opened, the pomegranates have bloomed.
There I will give my love to you. The mandrakes send out their fragrance, and at our doors are delicious fruits both new and old which I have kept for you, my beloved.
So what is this mandrake stuff and the old and new fruits. I get that she is talking about having sex, but what do these have to do with it?
In their culture they believed that the mandrake plant increased sexual desire and increased fertility. Whether or not that is accurate she is setting the expectation that she is totally ready to go. And when she says old and new fruits she is talking about doing things sexually that they have done before, and introducing some new things.
Wow. She is horny and aggressive.
Well I’m not sure how you describe horny. She isn’t just interested in sex. She is interested in sex with him. She would be glad to have his baby. The two of them are definitely becoming one. And yes she is being aggressive. In our culture that kind of scares guys. They like to feel like they are the one in control. But he isn’t having any trouble with it here. She has been aggressive, now what how she makes sure he is in the mood.
8:1-2 Oh that you were like a brother to me, who nursed at the breasts of my mother.
Then if I found you outside, I would kiss you, and no one would scorn me.
I would lead you to the house of my mother.
You would instruct me.
I would let you drink from the wine—the spice wine—
From the sweet wine of my pomegranate.
They are on their way, walking to the location she has been talking about. She doesn’t want him to be her actual brother, but she could hug and kiss her brother out in public and it would be fine in their culture. For them, a display of affection between a man and woman was strongly looked down on. Hey we don’t like it much in our culture either. Ever hear people say Get a room, when they see a couple showing affection in public. We aren’t that different from them. They are many ways she could describe her brother. Interesting how she works in breasts into the description. She is keeping him interested on the way. Notice that she is leading him on, that she is teasing him. She is only doing that about the timing. This is her husband and she is ready to do anything with him. If a girl teases a guy and leads him on, but isn’t planning on doing anything about it — that is different and it isn’t good.
