Now for the story. This takes place in Israel over 3000 years ago. It starts with a girl who is talking with her friends. She is interested in love, sex, romance, Marriage – a relationship with a special guy. She has her eye on a guy. They are interested in each other, but they aren’t a couple yet.
Narrator1.1 The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.
Shulammite (the girl)
She is talking with friends as she sees Solomon coming her direction
1.2 How I wish he would kiss me with the kisses of his mouth
Then turns and speaks to the audience
because your lovemaking is better than wine
3 For fragrance your perfumes are wonderful,
and perfume poured fragrantly is your name.
Therefore young maidens love you.
4 Draw me after you! Let us run together!
How I wish the king would bring me to his chambers!
Speaking to Solomon as he arrives
1.4 We will rejoice and delight in you.
We will celebrate your love more than wine.
A guy starts looking more attractive to girls when they know that a girl is interested in him. She doesn’t want them to really start flirting with him, so she agrees with them and then turns the conversation to herself.
She picks up from what they said and adds this
How right they are to love you.
Then she speaks to the friends while he is there
1.5 Dark am I, but lovely, O young women of Jerusalem,
like tents darkened, but like curtain of Solomon.
6 Do not stare at me because I am dark,
because the sun has gazed upon me.
The sons of my mother burned in anger toward me.
They appointed me caretaker of the vineyards,
But of my own vineyard which belongs to me I have not taken care.
He was supposed to disagree with her, or give her a compliment. He didn’t say anything. In his defense, his brain isn’t jumping from box to box as quickly as she changed the conversation. He is probably still thinking about the nice things they are all saying about him.
