2:7 – She Gives the Warning and Listens to it Herself, with Some Help
Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 2:7
verse 7
She gives this warning to the other young women.
First she says take an oath, this is real serious.
Don’t arouse or awaken love until it desires to awaken.
Or put it this way:
Don’t let your feelings take control and rush things.
She doesn’t say “If he gets the milk for free he won’t buy the cow”.
That is an old saying I’ve always thought was demeaning.
She doesn’t say: “If your feelings take control, make sure it is safe sex”.
She is concerned about getting feelings of love going before it desires.
IF YOU LET FEELINGS LEAD, AND GET PHYSICAL, YOU COULD AWAKEN LOVE TOO SOON.
You have heard girls saying “yes it is true that he is a lousy person, and I know it isn’t good for me to be with him but…I love him”. They know mentally that they shouldn’t stay with him but they awoke love and it attached her to him. He might not care about her, might not love her, might be abusive and never commit to her, but she is attached to him and it is really hard to ever get unattached.
In the Song, she isn’t talking about getting pregnant or getting some disease – she isn’t using some dumb story that is used to try to scare girls so they won’t have sex. She is focusing on LOVE and the incredible power that is generated when you release it. She talks about this more near the end of the Song. We will get to that part in more detail eventually.
What she is warning about is that the girls shouldn’t let feelings of love grow too early. You become your own worst enemy if you do. You may have this vision of what Prince Charming is like. Then you meet a guy and he meets 3 of the 100 qualifications. The tendency is to assume that he meets all the other qualifications. You open up your heart, make your body available and you become attached to a toad. OOPS!!!
The next passage is Song of Solomon 2:8-10.
