8:8-12 – Give Us Some Advice
Scripture Text: Song of Solomon 8:8-12
Dr Glickman has a book coming out in the spring of 2010 that has some very good insights on this section. For now, I’ll provide some insights.
The other women see that she has a great relationship and are now looking for some advice. The little sister with no breasts – this means her breasts haven’t developed yet. They answer their own question by saying that if she is a wall – isn’t giving away sex, then they will help her look better. But if she is giving away sex, opening up her body as easily as you would open a door, then they will control her so that there is no access to her, boarding up the door.
Her comment to them is that she is a wall – she doesn’t give away sex to anyone (we know she has it with her guy, but it is only with him). Notice how confident she is: “my breasts like towers”. Compare that to her early description of hers breasts as the hills of separation. Her confidence and attitude have certainly changed. There is a peace between them – not that they won’t disagree or won’t argue. But a peace that comes in knowing that in their relationship they can bring together love, sex, romance, marriage and find an enjoyment, a trust in each other to help fulfill each other.
She compares herself to a vineyard that Solomon owned. He lets people use the vineyard in exchange for a fee. Her vineyard is HER. Her body, her actions, her attitudes, her feelings, her love. SHE OWNS IT. And she gives it to him. Those who helped her keep her vineyard, those who helped her keep herself – in her case her brothers – for them she gives something too. In the first chapter she was upset with her brothers for making her work. Now she realizes that they also kept her from chasing after the guys and giving away her body, her love, her feelings. Now she appreciates it.
The next passage is Song of Solomon 8:13-14.
